On April 9, 1942, he became a Prisoner of War and took part in what is now called the "Bataan Death March." He was held as a POW at Camp O'Donnell and Cabanatuan.
Nick was sent to Japan and held at Osaka #3. While at the camp he witnessed the explosion of the atomic bomb over Nagasaki. He was liberated at the end of the war.
