Note that there is both a Cherokee, Nevada County, as well as a Cherokee, Butte County, and that both are referenced.

I have found that this is John Calanan, son of Humphrey and Honora Calanan of Cherokee, Nevada County, California. The newspaper had incorrect spelling of name, and of the county of birth. - Contributed by Kat B, via email May 29, 2022.

The Weekly Butte Record, Saturday, May 7, 1887, pg 1 col 2: John Callahan, a native of Cherokee, committed suicide at a saloon known as the "Deadfall", on the Brown's valley grade, Yuba county.
