Jake E. Goemaat, 87, of Oskaloosa, died Friday night, February 9, 2007, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City.

He was born December 22, 1919 in Charles Mix County, South Dakota, the son of John and Winifred Van Woerkom Goemaat. He moved to the Oskaloosa area with his family in 1934.

On August 8, 1942, Jake was united in marriage to Helen Cubit at Lancaster, Missouri.

He served in the United States Army during World War II. Following his discharge from the military, they returned to Mahaska County.

Early in his adult life, he worked for a sawmill, which began a lifelong enjoyment of cutting and hauling wood. He farmed, first near Cedar, then near Rose Hill, and lastly in the Union Mills neighborhood for over 30 years.

He was a long time member of Central Reformed Church and the Farm Bureau. Jake loved hunting and fishing, especially fishing on his farm pond.

Besides his parents, Jake was preceded in death by two brothers: John Goemaat and another in infancy; and four sisters: Ardith DeVries, Bessie Menning, Daisy Molenburg, and Anna Mae Van Duren.

Funeral services for Jake Goemaat will be held Tuesday, February 13, 2007, at 1:30 p.m. in the Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa with the Reverend Don DeGlopper officiating. There will be a Family Prayer Service Tuesday at 1:15 p.m. in the west wing of the church. Burial will be in the Union Mills Cemetery east of New Sharon, with graveside military rites given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion, V.F.W., and D.A.V. Visitation will begin at the Bates Funeral Chapel on Monday after 10 a.m., and the family will be at the funeral chapel on Monday from 5 - 7 p.m. to greet friends and relatives.

Memorials may be made to the Central Reformed Church Memorial Fund.
