Joe Macek, 83, of Wharton, Texas passed away on Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at a Houston hospice center. He was born in Hungerford, Texas on September 15, 1935, a son of the late Joe and Albina Maly Macek.

Joe was raised in the Hungerford and Pierce areas and attended schools there. Following his education, he joined the United States Army and served honorably. Joe married Adeline Poncik on November 5, 1956 in El Campo. She preceded him in death on October 29, 2014. Joe also began working at Texasgulf in 1956. This began a long career with them as he retired in 1983 as a station operator. Joe and Adeline also operated a bar in the Wharton area for many years. Joe was never one to sit still, even operating a farming operation during all these years. Joe was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Holy Family Catholic Church. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Macek, Sr, sister, Martha Macek and son, Ronald Macek.

Joe is survived by his daughter, Gayla Shimek and husband, Ronnie of Boling, son, Donald Macek and wife, Melinda of East Texas, sister, Evelyn Kramr and husband, Frank of East Bernard, brother, Marvin Macek and wife, Brenda of Wharton, grandchildren, Kyle Shimek, Kelsey Shimek Folmar, Meagan Macek, Matthew Macek, Donald Macek, Jr., and Tabitha Blank, and his great granddaughter, Eleanor Folmar.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 13, 2019 after 5pm with a parish rosary recited at 7pm at Wharton Funeral Home. The Funeral Mass and Rite of Committal will be held on Monday, January 14, 2019 at 10 am at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton with Father Bob Knippenberg celebrating the Mass. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton. Pallbearers will be Billy Macek, Binky Macek, Robert Macek, Kenneth Mican, Cole Macek and Dakota Leopold with honorary pallbearers, Kyle Shimek, E.P. Montalvo, Jimmy Alford, Larry “Beatle” Bailey, Mark Horelica, Bo Kucera, Andy Kirkland, Larry Douglas, Jerry Zuber and all his fellow members of the Knights of Columbus.
