Lloyd D. Apple 97, of Billings Montana, formerly of Keokuk, IA, died Wednesday, November 21, 2018 at the Tender Nest Assisted Living in Billings, MT.
He was born on December 2, 1920 in Danville, IN, the son of Harry and Bessie Cogle Apple. He spent much of his youth near Warsaw, IL.
In 1941, Lloyd married Anna L. Turtle, daughter of Ernest F. and Anna Turtle of Keokuk.
He served in the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant with the 11th Armored Division, which helped to liberate much of Europe during WW II. Like many veterans, his experiences during the war were defining moments in his life.
He was employed at the Hubinger Company in Keokuk for forty-two years with a break from 1942 – 1945 for military service.
Lloyd was a member of the International Order of odd Fellows for more than fifty years. He was a long-time member of the American Legion, and was a pall-bearer and flag-bearer for over one hundred military funerals at Keokuk National Cemetery.
Lloyd was an avid fisherman; he loved to bowl and was a life-long Chicago Cubs fan and was overjoyed at their 2016 World Series Championship. He loved trailer camping and for many years spent wonderful times with family and friends camping in many places throughout the tristate area.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, who spent many hours with his sons involved in Boy Scout projects and used his vacation time to be an adult counselor at Boy Scout Camp. He was a very giving and loving person who was always willing to lend a helping hand.
He is survived by sons Larry (Mary) Apple of Billings, MT and Gary (Kim) Apple of Aberdeen, MD, grandchildren, Brian Apple of Kissimmee, FL, Jessica Apple, Shannon Apple and Christopher Apple all of Aberdeen, MD and one great grandson; step-grandchildren, Mandy Baxter, Ann Akasmit, and Erin Osborne all of Sheridan Wyoming and seven step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11 am Friday, November 30, at the First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ in Keokuk with Pastor David Turner officiating. Burial with military rites was held in the Keokuk National Cemetery. Visitation was from 9 – 11 am Friday, November 30, at the Church with family meeting with friends at that time.
