John Anthony Fregonese, 66, died at home in Portland, Saturday, June 16, 2018, after a short illness. He had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer only a few weeks before. He was surrounded by family.
John was known throughout Oregon, the United States and even internationally as a visionary land-use planner who helped create livable, vibrant communities. He was passionate about urban planning and left his positive influence on hundreds of cities and communities.
He opened his own land-use planning consulting firm, Fregonese Associates, in 1997. Before that, he was planning director for the city of Woodburn from 1976 to 1979; the city of Ashland from 1979 to 1992; and for Metro regional government from 1992 to 1997.
John, known to many as "Frego," was greatly loved and admired for his infectious laugh, self-deprecating wit, love of food and music and ability to connect with people of all backgrounds and perspectives.
John and his wife Janet were married for 39 years before John's death. They traveled on adventures all over the world and loved spending time with their family. John is survived by his wife, Janet Fregonese; son, Scott Fregonese; daughter-in-law, Lori; grandchildren, Sophie and Dane; daughter, Dana Fregonese; son-in-law, Calvin; granddaughter, Finley; daughter, Zoe McAnally; and son-in-law, Christopher. John's family members all live in Portland.
Preceding him in death were his father, Hugo Fregonese; mother, Faith Domergue; and sister, Dede Fregonese. John grew up in Rome, Argentina and Hollywood.
A celebration of life service is being planned in late August; details will be shared later. John's many friends and colleagues are encouraged to post memories and photos on: frego.com
