George, a brick mason by trade, was the son of Asa Richardson and Lucinda H. Willey. He married Julia Ann Paul (1832-1888) in Massachusetts on 2 July 1856. They had at least one child, Emma.

He enlisted as a Landsman in the U.S. Navy on 15 May 1861, serving thereafter on the USS Brooklyn and gunboat "Pembina", and seeing action at Port Royal, Mobile and the Savannah River. He was discharged on 18 October 1864.

George was a member of the William H. Smart Post #30, Grand Army of the Republic, after the War.
