She was the daughter of Eli Nathan Chatfield and Rhoda Ann (Hester) Chatfield. She was adopted by Edward Bancroft Williston and his wife, Flora Estelle (Chatfield) Williston, at Portland, Oregon, on May 18, 1917. Rita's adoptive mother, Flora (Chatfield) Williston, was a paternal first cousin of Eli Nathan Chatfield, her biological father.
