AUGUSTA - William F. Helm Jr., 93, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2019, at the Alfond Center for Health in Augusta following a brief illness. He was born in Augusta, Maine, on June 1, 1925, a son of the late William F. Helm, Sr., and Phoebe M. (Braun) Helm.
Mr. Helm was a graduate of Cony High School and was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II and was held prisoner for six months in Czechoslovakia.
He had been employed as a Statistician by the State of Maine for over 40 years at the Highway Department.
Bill was, in a word, faithful. As husband, father, churchman, servant and prayer warrior, Bill was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene, where he served his Lord as board member, Sunday school teacher and missions president.
He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Esther E. (Windsor) Helm; a daughter, Sherryl A. Helm; and two sisters, Marjorie Chatto and Beverly Newbert.
Mr. Helm is survived by his children: Gail E. Duffy of Holliston, Mass., and Rev. Jon W. Helm and his wife, Susan, of Dartmouth, Mass.; five grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Burial will be in the spring in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Winthrop St., Augusta. Arrangements are under the care of Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, Maine.Condolences, photos and stories may be shared through the funeral home website at: www.plummerfh.com.
