Levi is mentioned in the book History of the descendants of Peter Spicer : a landholder in New London, Connecticut, as early as 1666, and others on page 217

He learned the trade of cordwainer. In 1816 he left the paternal home in Groton, Connecticut, deeply regretting parting from the stepmother (Prudence Palmer Spicer (1771-1846)
married 1795 to his father) whom he tenderly loved. He went first to Albany, New York where he was a proprietor of a store. After his marriage to Betsey he removed to Bromfield, Ohio and engaged in farming, afterwards removing to Geneva, where he first located on a farm, but later he set up a harness maker's establishment in the village of Geneva.

Military service: He served as a private in the War of 1812-1813, under Lathrop Williams.
