The son of Arsen and Maryam Babikyan, Jirair was born and raised in Istanbul, Turkey. Jirair was known by his middle name, Hagop, to his family and close friends, named after his maternal grandfather, Hagopos Ayvazian the liturgical musicologist at Armash Seminary.
