Son of John Mills, Sr and Elizabeth Edwards, born in Bush River, Newberry County, South Carolina approximately 1766.

It appears Alexander's mother, Elizabeth Edwards, died fairly young, possibly before 1775. His father remarried to Marry Pearson in 1793 and had at least 2 more children with her (Enoch and Elijah)

Alexander became a Quaker in 1782 as a result of his father making a Request to join the Society of Friends at the Bush River Monthly Meeting on 27 July of that year (per US Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, Vol I - VI, 1607 - 1943). Alexander's siblings included in that Request are documented as William, Marmaduke, (Alexander), John, Jemima, Elizabeth, and Mary (appears to be birth order).

Alexander married Eunice Pearson, daughter of Samuel Pearson and his 3rd wife Mary Rogers, on 6 Nov 1788 in Union County, South Carolina at the (Quaker) Cane Creek Monthly Meeting. Union County is directly north of Newberry County.

Alexander and Eunice migrated with approximately 100 other Quakers from Bush River, Newberry County, South Carolina in the very early 1800's due to their conviction that slavery was wrong. From research, it appears the group moved over a period of about 8 years. Alexander is documented as arriving in Newton Township, Miami County, Ohio in 1807. However, it appears he may have been elsewhere in Ohio slightly earlier (research pending).

A land record on Ancestry shows Alexander bought land "West of the Greater Miami" river; title was issued to him 14 March 1814. Alexander lived in Newton Township, Miami County, Ohio per US Census records 1820 - 1830, so it appears his farm would be in Newton Township.

I'm still piecing together Alexander and Eunice Pearson's children. My interest in Alexander and Eunice is in the possibility they are parents of Margaret Mills who married my 3X Great Grandfather in Miami County, Ohio in 1825. Although some Family Trees on Ancestry show Margaret as their daughter, neither those trees nor my own fairly extensive research yield any record of a child named Margaret so far. Please see Eunice's memorial re the children I have found.

I've found Alexander in most US Census records during his lifetime, beginning with the 1st US Census in 1790. This, of course, is explained by Alexander marrying in 1788, making him a Head of Household in time for the first US Census.

1790 Census: Newberry, South Carolina
1800 Census: Newberry District, South Carolina
1810 Census: Laurens County, South Carolina--this is questionable as he should be in Ohio, but I did not find such a record; Laurens County is adjacent (NW) to Newberry County, so perhaps he and Eunice had only moved this far in their migration to Ohio by 1810; however this conflicts with a Quaker record stating he arrived in Miami County, Ohio in 1807.
1820 Census: Newton Township, Miami County, Ohio
1830 Census: Newton Township, Miami County, Ohio
1840 Census: Did not find Alexander in Miami County, Ohio. Found 3 Alexander Mills elsewhere in Ohio, but none seem likely fits (Summit County, Marion County, and Carroll County)
1850 Census: Newton Township, Miami County, Ohio

Alexander is age 84 in the 1850 Census (Newton Township, Miami County, Ohio). He and Eunice are living in the home of their likely youngest child, Samuel Mills, and his wife and children. Samuel is is 40 years of age.

I've found no death or burial record for Alexander. But after immersing myself in basic Quaker beliefs over the last month, I understand they were most likely buried in unmarked graves (the belief being a marker is a sign of vanity). However, I feel a degree of confidence placing Alexander and Eunice in Caesar Creek Cemetery as this is where Alexander's father is buried (per FAG Memorial) and possibly where Eunice died per her Death Record found online. Since Eunice died before Alexander, her burial would logically dictate where Alexander would be buried.

As of this initial draft, I have NOT found Alexander and Eunice to be parents of Margaret, for whom I am searching. Nevertheless, since I acquired so much detail regarding their lives and found they had no memorials in FAG, I wanted to honor their memories to the best of my ability. I will appreciate corrections from descendants or researchers to enhance accuracy and detail of these 2 remarkable people whom I'd be honored to have as ancestors.
