Ron LeHew - an artist, writer and town crier, died December 23rd in University of Pennsylvania Hospital at the age of 61. A proud resident of Salem, Ron grew up with dreams of becoming a karate instructor but instead graduated from the Hussian School of Art in Philadelphia where he later was recruited to work for Hallmark Cards. After moving back to Philadelphia, he taught as an adjunct professor at Hussian before returning to Salem in 1973 to become a freelance children's book illustrator. It was a few years later when he discovered another love, portraying a colonial town crier for local open house and special events.

In 1994 he was named the Official Town Crier of Salem County. In 1989 he was asked to be a bi-weekly columnist for Today¹s Sunbeam. Ron recently fulfilled a life long dream to compile his columns in a book entitled Mist over the Meadows. He was a member of Penns Grove Excelsior Lodge #54 F& A.M.

Ron is survived by his wife, Jeanne; his first wife, Sandy; son, Christian; two stepsons, Kevin and Erich; brother, Thomas; and three grandchildren, Julia, Gavin and Justin.

A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday December 30, 2006 in Saint John's Episcopal Church, Market and Grant Streets, Salem.

Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers the family suggests purchasing a copy of his book to always keep Ron¹s love for life alive and to share it with others. Ron LeHew's Mist Over the Meadows is available in Salem at Parker Jewelers, Debbie's Saltbox, Butler Gardens, Market Street Treasures and The Pennsville Public Library or through [email protected].

Arrangements are by WOODSIDE FUNERAL HOME, Salem.
