A Civil War veteran, he first served an uneventful two weeks as a private with Wiest Independent Co September 12 - 24, 1862, during the Antietam crisis. He then enlisted in Harrisburg September 5, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 6 as a private with Co. E, 207th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 21, 1865.
He married Emma Catherine Adams 1869 in York and fathered Mary Edith (b. 11/05/70 - married George K. Loss), George T. (b. 02/02/73), Daniel H. (b. 12/19/74), Joseph W. (b. 05/??/77), Bertha K. (b. 09/06/81), William A. (b. 04/??/84), John E. (b. 03/??/87), and Ivan Francis (b. 04/17/91). In 1890, he lived in Hanover, York County, in 1900, in neighboring Penn Township, but died in Germany Township, Adams County, from "acute endocarditis." Two of his grandsons died in action during WWI.
