Son of John V. Ballard and Maria Smith, husband of Martha Blakeslee Ballard. Father of Jennie, Oscar 'Burr', Kate, Dr. Mahlon ('Mel') and Lucille Ballard. He spent most of his life as a farmer, raising sheep and dairy cattle.
"Grandfather Ballard" (Lert) served in Company D, 132nd Pennsylvania Volunteers during the Civil War, and held the rank of Sargeant. He fought at Antietam, Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg, and South Mountain. He was discharged after 9 mo. service. He farmed until 1876 then started a General Merchandise Business "DeWitt and Ballard" in Troy, Pa. He enlisted 8-12-1862, (five days after his marriage to Martha Blakeslee), and mustered out 5-24-1863. CIVIL WAR MARKER
