Enlisted as Private, July 3, 1861; Surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse, VA, April 9, 1865 and walked back to Walton County, GA

Family member has his original release from Appomattox and his Membership Ribbon from the R. E. Lee Camp NO 1055, UCV, Monroe, GA

Iron Cross was dedicated in October, 2103 and was stolen within a month from his gravesite!!

Stories passed down through family, he says that he remembers how beautiful the Shenandoah Valley was in the snow. Though beautiful he could not enjoy as there was a war raging. He always wanted to go back and see it again.

He was small in statue, barely 5 foot and small. Some of the bigger farm boys would help carry his infantry gear and tell him to stay close to them, that they would help him.

He surrendered April 9, 1864, at Appromattox Courthouse, VA and walked all the way back home to Walton County, GA.

The antique Iron Cross was installed, with concrete, in October 2013 and less than ONE month later, it was either stolen or removed by someone. GA Code: imprisonment for not less than one nor more than three years if the value of the property which was the subject of the theft is $300.00 or less, and by imprisonment for not less than three years and not more than five years if the value of the property which was the subject of the theft is more than $300.00.
