John W. Alexander was married to Mary Malinda "Liny" Masters on 12 Feb 1823 in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. Bondsman was Robert Campbell, and the witness was M. Hunt.

The obituary of Sarah Jane Alexander Hurn, gives the following information about her father:
"J. W. Alexander, the father of Mother Hurn, came to Lawrence County from North Carolina in an ox wagon in 1829 and settled near Pocahontas. Mr. Alexander with his family crossed the Mississippi River at Memphis and Mr. Alexander helped cut the wagon road from Memphis to Pocahontas. Five years later Mr. Alexander was drowned in a steamboat wreck near Memphis." This information seems to be the source for his death date being listed as 1834. His cause of death is also echoed in "Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Northeast Arkansas, Chicago, Nashville, and St. Louis" (The Goodspeed Publishing Co.) 1889, "John W. Alexander drowned during a steamboat wreck that occurred near Memphis."

Randolph County, Arkansas wills and administrations page 22 includes: John W. Alexander, Mary Alexander administratrix, October 1837.
