John R. HEDGES was the 5th son and 8th child of Bullitt County Sheriff Joseph HEDGES, Jr. and Elizabeth McMillian (BRISCOE) HEDGES, and grandson of Captain Joseph HEDGES of the Revolution and Elizabeth RAWLINGS, and apparently of George Cole BRISCOE II and Sarah MASON of Berkeley Co., VA (now WV).

His middle name is presumed to be Riley, because he gave two of his sons the middle name Riley, including John Riley HEDGES, Jr.

He was born around 1810 in Bullitt County, KY, and grew up in the area west and south of Mt. Washington.

On 21 Jul 1831, in the Bullitt County seat of Shepherdsville, John married Mary Lucinda STALLINGS, a young lady who also was born and raised in the same part of eastern Bullitt County.

John and Lucinda moved to the southern part of central Daviess County, KY, maybe around 1839 or so---near the present town of Utica. John R. HEDGES was a member of Green Brier Baptist Church, and was a founding member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church (now the Utica Baptist Church) on 15 Sep 1854. It is believed he was either an ordained Baptist minister or an ordained Baptist deacon, therefore he is referred to in our family sometimes as "Rev. John Riley HEDGES".

His wife and mother of all his children died on 24 Jul 1857 of tuberculosis, probably at the old hospital in Owensboro, Daviess County, KY. She was very likely buried with family in the cemetery at the old Green Brier Baptist Church near Utica. Her grave today is likely either unmarked completely or marked with a field stone, probably in the near vicinity of her granddaughter and namesake, Lucinda B. HEDGES (1856-1876), whose marker still stands (this Lucinda was daughter of Joseph & Cynthia HEDGES---Cynthia was the daughter of John Riley and Lucinda HEDGES, and married a cousin Joseph HEDGES).

A couple of years passed after Lucinda died, and in 1859, John Riley and most of his children and grandchildren packed up and moved about 75 miles west to a sleepy little area of southern White County, Illinois. They settled S/E of the very old county seat town of Carmi, right around the area between the old Walnut Grove Missionary Baptist Church near Brownsville, and the old Lick Creek Primitive Baptist Church west of Herald, IL.

John Riley married again in 1861 to a widow lady named Mrs. Mary Elizabeth "Polly" BROWN (1813-aft. 1870), whose maiden name WEISE or WEISS, from Knox Co. & Roane Co., TN. She was the widow of William BROWN of Knox Co., TN (1806-1852), who she married on 20 Mar 1827 in Roane Co., TN, and bore William 6 sons and 1 daughter, who became the step-brothers and -sisters of the HEDGES children of John Riley HEDGES, Sr.

It would seem that John and Polly lived very close to the small village of Herald, in south central White Co., probably from the time of their marriage until John died, in about 1869. In the 1870 Census, his widow Mary (WEISE BROWN) HEDGES was living with her youngest son James Monroe BROWN about 17 miles south of Herald, IL, near Equality, IL, in Gallatin County. They lived next to other HEDGES families, who seem to have moved there just after the Civil War; they were the nephews of John Riley.

We still don't know for certain where old John R. HEDGES was buried, but it appears more and more likely that he was buried in the old Herald Cemetery---one of its earlier burials (although the first couple was in the 1840's, and then the next known burials were in the late 1860's about the time of John Riley's death).

John Riley HEDGES's fist wife Mary Lucinda STALLINGS was the daughter of John STALLINGS and Cynthia BRASHEAR of Bullitt Co., KY, and granddaughter of Samuel STALLINGS and Sarah OGDEN, and of Colonel Marsham BRASHEAR, one of the founding Trustees of Louisville, KY, and Lucy PHELPS of Ft. Boonesborough.
