Barbara was born July 9, 1923 in Houston, Texas to Fred and Grace Nesmith. She married Roland B. Close on July 27, 1946 in Riverside, Texas. During the next 23 years of Roland's military service, they were stationed in various places before being assigned to Dyess AFB in Abilene where Barbara enjoyed a career of substitute teaching that spanned 31 years. They enjoyed 50 years together before Roland passed away on November 12, 1996. Barbara has been a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church for many years. Her church was an important part of her life until her health prevented her participation. With a strong and abiding faith, she was ready to be with the Lord and the loved ones who have gone before her.

Besides her parents and husband, Barbara is preceded in death by her sister, Frances Huston of Houston, Texas and her brother, Fred Nesmith, Jr., of Huntsville, Texas.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Sears Methodist Nursing Center for their compassionate care and support for Barbara during the four years she resided there. The family expresses their gratitude to the Aldersgate United Methodist Church family and to Barbara's many other friends for their phone calls, visits, prayers and support through the years.
