She was born in Augusta County on July 1, 1922, and was a daughter of the late Hensel Givens and Nellie Irene (Shull) Dennison.
Carolyn was a member of Emmanuel Church of the Brethren. She retired from Dunham Bush when they closed, and then worked at the Village Inn. She was a graduate of North River High School.
She was united in marriage on Jan. 1, 1947, to Verlin Evers Michael, who preceded her in death on Jan. 31, 2011.
She is survived by her children, Sharon Hanger and husband, Emmett, of Sangerville, Durwood Michael and wife, Zo, of Mount Crawford, Erwin Michael and wife, Carol, of Harrisonburg and Vern Michael and wife, Mary Jane, of Port Republic; a brother, Garland Dennison and wife, Mary Lee, of Mount Sidney; and a brother-in-law, Raymond Diehl of Weyers Cave. Twelve grandchildren, Shelley (Chris) Husband, Michael (Tammy) Hanger, Scott (Joanne) Hanger, Heidi (Norris) Bunn, Chad Hanger, Ashley (Jeremy) Blackwell, Adam (Marguerite) Michael, Alexandria (Marshall) Channing, Jenifer (Bryan) Fletcher, Valeda (Wes) Blank, Justin (Holly) Michael and Michelle (Josh) Vaughan; 33 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren also survive.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Kathleen Milstead and Lorraine Diehl, and two brothers, Stanford Dennison and twin brother, Carroll Dennison.
