ELDRIDGE, E. CHARLES
Age 64. Of Sewell. Died Tuesday Nov. 27, 2001, at his daughter's home. Husband of the late Rosemary V. (nee Turner). Mr. Eldridge was born in Sicklerville and lived most of his life in Sewell, Mantua Twp. He attended Sewell Elementary School and graduated from Pitman High School in 1956. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 through 1958, serving in Korea in the 1956 in the 29th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, and from 1956 to 1958 in the Ryukyu Islands Ordinance Group in Okinawa, Japan. He was awarded the N.D.S. for Korean Service. From 1958 through 1963, Mr. Eldridge served in the U.S. Air Force. He was in the Airborne Electronic Intercept, Countermeasures (ELINT-RAVEN), and stationed at Misawa Air Base in Japan in 1959. From 1959 to 1960 he was a Ground A/C ECM Repairman at Hokkaido Air Base, Wakkanai, Japan, and from 1960 to 1963 was in the 544th Reconnaissance Technical Group (SAC) and stationed at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska. He was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation during John F. Kennedy's presidential term for involvement with the Soviet Missile Crisis in Cuba. Mr. Eldridge was a member of the American Legion Post 133 in Woodbury and was a life member and past Post Commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4189 in Turnersville. He was an employee of Western Electric in Omaha, Nebraska, until 1967 and earned an Associates Degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. In 1967 he transferred to AT&T Long Lines in Camden, NJ and was a technician and a supervisor in AT&T Long Lines and Communications until retiring in December of 1989. He worked in Camden, Cedarbrook, Quinton, Cherry Hill and Philadelphia while with AT&T. From 1991 until December of 1998 he worked part time at Drissel's Hardware in Pitman. In the past, Mr. Eldridge had been active in the Mantua Twp. Democrat Club, was a member of the Mantua Twp. Recreation Committee, and was an active member of the Sewell Fire and Ambulance Co. for six years. During the years of 1972 through 1983 he served as Sewell Boys' Club president for two years, and secretary for three years. He coached the 9 to 12 yr old Sewell Boys Club baseball team, and the 110-lb. Sewell Boys Club football team. He also helped organize and was coach of Mantua Township's first year of 125-lb. football. Mr. Eldridge was an avid golfer and enjoyed hunting and fishing as well. He had been a member of the Rio Fishing Club, and was still active in the North Forty Rod and Gun Club. He golfed in the Bell Atlantic (Verizon) and IBEW golf leagues. Mr. Eldridge recently became a member of the Gloucester County Community Church in Washington Twp., and on January 16th of this year accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and was born again into the Kingdom of God. He is survived by his daughter Susan Cox and her husband Bill of Sewell, a son Steven of Sewell, his father J. Emerson Eldridge of Elyria, OH, 2 brothers Robert of Zionsville, PA, Donald of Cedarville, 2sisters Constance Eldridge of Elmer, Nina Yancer of Elyria, OH, 3 grandsons, William, Christopher, & Matthew Cox. Predeceased by his mother Beatrice and brothers Russell, Joseph and Barry. Also survived by his mother-in law Rose Turner. Relatives and friends may call Sunday 7 to 9 PM and Monday 10 to 11AM at the SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 47 Main St., Mantua. Funeral Service will be Monday 11AM at the funeral home. Interment will be in Brig. Gen. Wm Doyle Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown.
