Mrs. Bates was a member of Greater St. Luke Baptist Church for most of her life. Later, she was under church watch at King Emanuel Church and then God's Deliverance Church. She retired from Custodial Service with Richland County School District One.
Mrs. Bates leaves to cherish her memory; four daughters, Reverend Mozelle Bates Jones, Mrs. Georgia M. Jones both of Coulmbia, South Carolina, Mrs. Bessie L. Durham of Hopkins, South Carolina and Dorothy Cooke of Camden, South Carolina; eight sons, Wilbert Buchanan, Marion Bates, Jr., William, Jerry, Robert, Henry, George and Sherman Bates, all of Columbia, South Carolina; also surviving are two sonsin-law, James Jones of Columbia, South Carolina and Warner Cooke of Camden, South Carolina; four daughters-in-law, Marie, Loretta, Pamela and Mary Bates, all of Columbia, South Carolina; two sisters Mary J. Boyd of Chester, South Carolina and Jessie Purcell of Greensboro, North Carolina; forty-two grandchildren; sixty-five greatgrand children; sixteengreat-great grandchildren; and a host of other nieces and nephews and friends.
