James Elisha Ashe was born, along with his twin brother Alex Elijah Ashe (1898-1992), on 2 September 1898 in Webster, North Carolina, the son of John Vance Ashe (1869-1945) and Eleanora "Ellen" Bumgarner Ashe (1873-1960). He and his brother were both inducted into the U.S. Army at the tail end of WWI, only to be honorably discharged just two months later after Armistice Day in 1918. He was married to Anne Lelia Winberry (1899-1990) on 18 September 1921 in Durham, NC. They had four sons. He worked as an accountant, and they lived in Asheville, NC for most of their lives. He was widowed in 1990. He died on 9 May 1997 in Asheville, NC at the age of 98.
