Albert C. "Abe" Hammer, 74, of Pine Street, owner of the Berkshire Chalet Resort-Motel, died yesterday morning at Willowood Nursing & Retirement Facility.

He was born in Great Barrington on February 6, 1917, son of August and Maude Grant Hammer. He graduated in 1934 from the former Searles High School, where he competed in baseball, track, and basketball, and from Springfield College. Also a graduate of the Hempill Diesel School in Boston, he taught there for a short time before going to work for the family business, the Hammer Plumbing Co.

In 1948, Mr. Hammer built the Chalet on Route 7, which was considered to be the first motel in South Berkshire. In 1961 he purchased the former Colonial Inn on Maple Avenue, renovated it and renamed it the Berkshire Chalet Inn. In 1970 he purchased the Barn Club and in 1986 turned the adjacent land into the Barnyard Golf Club, a par-3 course.

He won many golf tournaments in the 1940s and 1950s at the Wyantenuck Country Club and Stockbridge Golf Club. Also, a skier, he was one of the first people to use the short ski, which he introduced at Catamount Ski Area.

Mr. Hammer was a member of the First Congregational Church, serving as treasurer, Wyantenuck Country Club, Cincinnatus Lodge, AF&AM, Melha Temple, Berkshire Shrine Club, and the Rotary Club.

He leaves two sons, Jay A. Hammer of Maui, Hawaii and Curtiss F. Hammer of Exeter, N.H.; two brothers, Robert O. and Paul L. Hammer, both of Great Barrington; and a granddaughter.

The funeral will be conducted Friday at 10 at the First Congregational Church by the Rev. Charles VanAusdall, pastor. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

Calling hours will be tomorrow from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 at Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home. A Masonic service will be conducted there at 7:30.
