An OBIT for our Mom
Our mother, grandmother, and great grandmother Mary Ann Caldwell Short became a beautiful flower in God’s Garden about 3:35 PM on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2019, at her home in Wimberley, Hays Co. Texas. She was on hospice the week before she passed, and all her family gathered at her home to share some time with her. Her daughters Cindi and Mary and grandson Lyon Harris were with her in her final moments.
Mary Ann was born Aug. 7, 1922 at Sparks Hospital in Ft, Smith, Arkansas to Frederick Seaman Caldwell and Mary Bond Shultz. She was the oldest of 4 daughters. She lived in Mansfield, Arkansas until the 2nd grade then her family moved to Poteau , OK, then McAlester, then Ada before arriving in Seminole, Oklahoma where she graduated from high school. There she met her future husband Thomas McVey Short who worked for the Hughes Tool Co. On October 4, 1941, in Norman, OK, they were married and to that marriage were born 3 children, 7 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. They moved from Seminole, OK to Pratt, Kansas, then Duncan and Norman Oklahoma, then Houston Texas, then Lafayette, Shreveport, Houma, and Metairie Louisiana, then Maracaibo, Venezuela and Bogota, Columbia then back to Houston then Seguin before settling in Wimberley, Texas where she finally got her “granny house”. Mary Ann was an accomplished tennis player when she was young. She enjoyed watching sports on tv and rarely missed a good tennis match. Pro golf and OU football were her favorites. She loved nature, was an avid gardener and usually of the president of the garden club in most places she lived. She was a floral judge when she was 27 and often said that each day she would look in her garden and name one of her flowers “Queen for the Day”. Her comparison of raising children to growing plants is memorable. She was a member of Ikebana International she stayed active and appreciative in flower arranging until her final days. Mom left us with a legacy of seeing the beauty in our surroundings and with a constant curiosity to understand the things we might not.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Tom M. Short, 2 sisters, Harriett Henderson and Jane Sims. She is survived by her youngest sister Virginia Lee Caldwell, son Tom M. Short II and wife Joy, daughter Cynthia Haliburton and husband John, Mary Monanghan and husband Brian, grands Tom M. (Makk) Short III, Molly Francis, James Haliburton, Catherine Inkelaar and husband Dave, Johnny Haliburton and wife Genevieve, Lyon Harris and wife Kristen, Mary Ann Monaghan, great grands Evelyn Francis, Hannah Haliburton, Tommy Inkelaar, Micheal Inkelaar, Anna Inkelaar, Johannah Haliburton, Robert Haliburton, Lilliana Harris and Violet Tilley.
