Obituary: Opal Dunham Garton, age 95, of Weston, WV passed away in the early morning hours of Friday, February 22, 2019 under the compassionate care of Crestview Manor Nursing Home Staff. Prior to Crestview, she resided at Maplewood Assisted Living where she also received loving care. Opal was born in Weston, WV on April 27, 1923, the youngest child of Winfield Scott Dunham and Effie Mae Henry Dunham. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Charles E. Garton, on April 20, 2000. Also preceding her in death were three brothers: Hugh, Wayne, and Earl Dunham; and three sisters: Garnet Campbell, Pauline Bouch, and Marie Palmer. Carrying on Opal’s legacy are two sons: Stephen “Scott” Garton and wife, Janie, and Charles Gregory “Greg” Garton both of Weston; two daughters: Deborah Garton and husband, Fred Butler, of Bluefield, WV; and Melissa Allison and husband, Rusty, of Weston; six grandchildren: Lesley White and husband, John, Brannon Garton, WV; Seth Wilson and wife, Allison, Leigh Anne Wilson, Field Garton, and Lindsay Wahlquist and husband, Matt; and ten great grandchildren: Leo and Luke White, Lily Davis, Carter and Aaron Wilson, Matthew and Ian Pierson, Olivia and Max Garton, and Liam Wahlquist; one sister-in-law, Ann Dunham; and six wonderful caregivers: Sandy Whitehair, Charlotte Fultineer, Robin Rush, Kay Evans, Cathy Smith, and Melody White. Opal was a graduate of Weston High School class of 1941. She then became a real estate broker. She and her husband, Charlie, founded Garton Real Estate and Construction and operated the business in Weston for over 30 years. Opal was an avid bridge player and was a member of the same bridge club for over 50 years. She was also a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Weston. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made in Opal’s memory to St. Patrick's Catholic Church or School. Contributions may be mailed to 210 Center Ave. Weston, WV 26452. Family and friends will gather at St. Patrick's Catholic Church located at 210 Center Ave. in Weston from 10-11 AM on Monday, February 25, 2019. Funeral Mass will be held at 11 AM with Reverend Jeremiah McSweeney as celebrant. Interment will follow at the Masonic Cemetery in Weston.
