American Politician. He is remembered as the nominee of the Farmer–Labor Party for President of the United States in 1920. He was also a member of the Utah House of Representatives (1910 to 1912) and of the Los Angeles, California, City Council (1939 to 1949). Born of Danish parents, he moved with his family to Utah when he was a child. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from University of Utah Normal School (now Southern Utah University) in 1890 and a Bachelor of Laws Degree from Cornell University Law School in 1897, and returned to practice law in Salt Lake City, Utah. During his life, he was affiliated with many political parties, including the Republican (before 1912), Progressive (1912 to 1919 and 1924 to 1934), Labor (1919 to 1920), Farmer-Labor (1920 to 1924), Independent (1934 to 1937), and Democratic (1937 to 1954). He also served as a city attorney and a county attorney in Utah and the chairman of the Illinois Progressive Party. In 1926 he was an unsuccessful candidate for US Senator from Illinois. In the early 1930s, he moved to California, where he joined with the End Poverty in California crusade of Upton Sinclair, with the Utopian Society. He died at the age of 84.
