He was one of a family of two sons and five daughters, His father is a native of Saxe-Meiningen, Germany, and his mother, who died in November 1873, was Miss Theresa Jackins, a native of Alsace. His surviving brother is William H. Matthai. James E. Ingram, also a partner in the firm, is a brother-in-law. His wife, who was Miss Honora O'Brien, survives him.

The funeral of Mr. Joseph Fleming Matthai, who died early Monday morning, took place yesterday from the home of his father, Mr. John C. Matthai, "Linden Hill," Arlington, and was largely attended. Services were conducted by Rev. Hutchinson, pastor of Arlington Southern Methodist Church of which Mr. Mattai had been a member for a number of years. Burial was in Baltimore Cemetery.
Mr. Matthai had been a sufferer from acute laryngitis for a long time. Last winter he suffered a good deal and in the spring when to Southern Pines, NC in the hope that his health would improve. His trip did not benefit him, however, and he had been confined to his room almost the whole time since his return home a few weeks ago. He was quiet and retiring in his disposition, but of gentle, kindly manners, and had a great number of warm friends. A widow, who was Miss Honora F. O'Brien, survives him.
