Myrtle Louise (Pfeffer) Hudgins, 86, kept her 3:52 pm appointment with God and entered heaven on February 21, 2019 after a five year battle with multiple myeloma blood cancer. Myrtle was born in Bellville, TX on February 17, 1933 to parents Louis and Gladys Pfeffer and was raised on the family farm with her sister Audrey, brother Larry and nearby cousins.

Life on the farm was hard but also idyllic with garden fresh veggies, fresh dairy, beef and poultry. Everything was homemade. While growing up, Myrtle’s family were all members of St. John Lutheran Church in Bellville where Myrtle was also confirmed in 1945. Myrtle attended Bellville schools and graduated from high school in 1950. After high school, Myrtle worked at Bellville Hospital in the nursing program until she married Gordon Ralph Hudgins in 1951. Myrtle and Ralph soon moved to Baytown, TX, where as a full-time Mom, she raised four children; Robert (Bobby), Alan, Steve and Cathy.

Myrtle also worked as a Nursing Assistant while her kids were in high school. Myrtle was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Baytown for 60 years, taught Sunday school, led club meetings and volunteered thousands of hours in service. Myrtle’s precious joys in life were her family and pets, talking to relatives/friends, cooking/baking, gardening, backyard birding and nature. Myrtle’s 15 minutes of fame happened in Longview, TX many years ago. World-famous magician David Copperfield chose Myrtle from the audience to be part of his “floating rose” magic trick on stage. Myrtle kept the magic rose and loved the kiss from David. Myrtle’s last whispered words were, “When I’m gone, I want y’all to say nice things about me.” Her son Alan replied, “We will Mother because we all love you.”

Myrtle was preceded in death by her firstborn son Bobby, (August 1973); father Louis, (April 1998); husband Ralph, (July 2006); mother Gladys, (October 2017); and nephew Michael Davis, (February 2018).

She is survived by three children, Alan Hudgins of Baytown, Steve Hudgins, (Lainey) of Lago Vista, TX, and Cathy Hudgins of Baytown; her sister Audrey Davis of Slocum, TX, brother Larry Pfeffer (Lynn) of Lindale, TX, niece Sharon Davenport, (Jim) of Palestine, TX, niece Brenda DeLeon (Henry) of Hockley, TX, niece Molly Escalante (Ryan) of Magnolia, TX and nephew David Pfeffer of Victoria, TX. Grandchildren/Grandnieces-nephews: Katie, Annie (Nic), Hayli (Ryan), Christi, Justin, Paxton, Tyler, Allison, Madelyn, Ryan, Morgan, Ayden and more.

A special thank you with deep abiding gratitude goes to family members Audrey Davis, Larry and Lynn Pfeffer, and Sharon and Jim Davenport for all that you’ve done.

The funeral service will commence at Earthman Baytown Funeral Home, 3919 Garth Rd. Baytown, TX 77521 on Friday, March 8, 2019 at 12:00 noon. (A catered brunch for family, friends and relatives will be served prior to that at 10:30 am.) A private processional and graveside burial service will follow at Earthman Memory Gardens, 8624 Garth Rd. Baytown, TX 77521.
