Charles Dixon "Dick" Abernathy, a Vail, Ariz., resident, died on March 20, 2004, after a long illness.
He is survived by his wife, Clara; his son, Danny; his brother, John and wife, Kathy; his nephews, John Jr., Sam and Seth; and his niece, Debbie.
Born in Oakland, Calif., on Sept. 7, 1925, Dick was an avid and experienced horseman who studied natural horsemanship under Pat Parelli.
Some of his accomplishments included numerous Tucson to Tombstone horseback trail rides, completing the ride without benefit of a bridle.A 23-year U.S. Navy veteran, Dick enlisted in September 1942.
He served as a gunner on Navy torpedo bombers and completed his World War II service as an aviation radioman. He served in various posts throughout the Pacific Theater during the war.
He was first discharged in November 1946 and settled in California to work on the family ranch.
He was recalled to active service in the Navy at the outbreak of the Korean Conflict in 1950. He served as a carrier air traffic controller and as a crewmember aboard a C-121 "Constellation." He remained in the Navy and served aboard the USS Orinskany (CVA 34), which included service in Vietnam. He retired from the Navy in February 1966. Dick Abernathy held a private pilots license, worked as an over the road long haul trucker and operated the post stables at Fort Huachuca, Ariz.
Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 24, 2004, at St. Rita in the Desert, 11353 Colossal Cave Road. Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. at Southern Arizona Veterans Cemetery in Sierra Vista, Ariz., with military honors by the U.S. Navy.
