The daughter of Rev William Franklin and Katye Barcus who came from Indiana in 1878. Her Father was the editor of "The Christian Messenger" and preached in area churches. He owned and operated a bookstore in Dallas. As a child she witnessed the Dallas County courthouse burn down and the Trinity river flood in 1890, which collapsed the Commerce Street bridge. She also witnessed the arrival of steamboats arriving in Dallas in 1893 in what was an attempt to utilize the Trinity river as a navigatable waterway. After graduating from High School she became a teacher in Western Heights and Kit, Texas. She met her future husband, Otis Brown, in 1902 while he was working with a railroad surveying crew and she was boarding at the W.F. Britain farm. They married 24 June 1903 and had six children; a daughter (stillborn in 1904) and sons Clarence Loyd, Oliver Stanley, Lawrence Earl, John Franklin,and Irving Lynn Brown. Otis co-founded the town of Irving, Texas with J.O. Schulze and became its first Mayor in 1914.
