With record of about 12,400 funerals, the largest number of any colored funeral director in Washington. John T. Rhines and his staff of employees are celebrating his 31st anniversary in business here this week. Mr. Rhines who is confined at home with a slight cold stated Tuesday, that his records for this year show that his firm has buried 345 persons. His yearly averages between 400 and 500. With the minimum of 400 he has buried at least 12,400 since he has been in business in Washington.Shortly after leaving Fisk University where he attended school, and received his education, Mr. Rhines graduated from the Chicago College of Embalming. after graduating he came to the District and purchased the undertaking business of George W. Morgan at Second and F Streets, Southwest. Later he purchased an old feed store at Third and I Streets, his present location, where he has been for the past 20 years. Mr. Rhines is known as the "Mayor of Southwest" Washington. He is he president of the Southwest Civic Association, president of the parent-teacher association of the Anthony Bowen School, grand director of athletics of the Elks, member of the Zion Baptist Church and is connected with "everything in Southwest" according to people who knew him. Recently, Morning Star Lodge of Elks voted him a life membership in the lodge for 30 years of continuous service in the order. At present his chief interest is to secure better housing for the people of the Southwest as well as better school facilities. Mr. Rhines recently married Miss Edna Holmes, principal of the Cleveland-Grimke School and lives at his place of business.
