F. Baldwin Harrington, Jr., M.D., 86, passed away on Monday, March 4, 2019 in Fredericksburg.
Born in Norfolk, Baldwin graduated from Granby High School and, following in his father’s footsteps, attended Virginia Military Institute, graduating in 1954. The V.M.I. yearbook from that year describes him as “one of the most well liked men in his class.”
Baldwin attended medical school at the University of Virginia and completed his internship, surgical residency, and orthopedic residency at Emory University and Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. He then served in the United States Army at Fort Riley, Kan., where he was in charge of an orthopedic ward at Irwin Army Hospital.
In 1965, Baldwin became Fredericksburg’s first practicing orthopedist, establishing Fredericksburg Orthopedic Associates. He continued his distinguished medical practice until his retirement, when his passion for flying emerged. Other hobbies of Baldwin’s include hunting, fishing, and being in nature. He was a champion tennis player and a miserable golfer. Baldwin loved spending time with family and friends and his home, “Riverview,” in Fleeton on the Chesapeake Bay.
In addition to his career, Baldwin was committed to several community organizations. He volunteered his services through the Moss Free Clinic and served as a board member for Families of the Wounded Fund. Baldwin was a founding member of the Central Virginia Battlefields Trust, which strives to protect hallowed grounds of historic value.
Survivors include his devoted wife, Marti Harrington; children Win Harrington (Carla), Jill Harrington, Anna Harrington Lee (Frankie), Dean Harrington (Margarita), and Keith Harrington (Stacey); stepchildren Bert Miller (Kari) and Jacqueline Miller White (Will); grandchildren Franklin Lee, Robert Lee, Tiffany Harrington, Yulia Harrington, Bryce Harrington, Summer Harrington, Sager White, Lila White, Eliza Miller and Aksel Miller; and sister Anne Harrington Kiland.
A service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 9 at Trinity Episcopal Church, 825 College Ave., Fredericksburg, VA 22401.
The family would like to thank the caregivers at Hughes Home and Mary Washington Healthcare Hospice for the love and care they provided.
