Gary Lynn Heavner, 71, of Valdese, passed away on Monday March 4, 2019 at his residence, surrounded by his friends and family, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Mr. Heavner was born August 25, 1947 in Burke County, a son of the late Phifer and Mattie Lail Heavner. He was a faithful member of East Valdese Baptist Church, serving as a deacon, building committee and maintenance committee chairman. As a member of BRICK Missions and Carpenters in Christ, he participated in a several mission trips to different parts of the country. Gary was self employed as a farmer, contractor and brick mason and built several houses in the Burke, Catawba and Caldwell county area. He was a veteran of the Army Nation Guard of North Carolina, a former Boy Scout Leader with Troop # 193, served for 19 years and was a Captian of the Lovelady Fire Department and was on the Board of the Burke County Farm Bureau for 45 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Herman Heavner, Cecil Heavner and a sister Ruby Heavner.
Surviving are his wife of fifty one years, Sandra Abernathy Heavner of the home, a son, P.A. Heavner and Lisa of Valdese, two daughters, Regina King and husband Shannon of Hildebran, Allie Meaders and husband Joseph of Anderson, SC. , brother Homer Heavner and wife Pat of Valdese , sister, Janette Lowman and husband Joe of Valdese and sister-in-law, Sally Heavner of Valdese. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Garrison Cook, Dalton King and Keegan Meaders and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services for Gary Heavner will be held at 3:00 P.M. Thursday March 7, 2019 at East Valdese Baptist Church with Rev. Lee Harris, Rev. Tom Brooks, Rev. Mike Lawghorn and Rev. Rudy Hayes officiating. Entombment will follow in the Burke Memorial Park Mausoleum.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. Wednesday at Heritage Funeral Service, Valdese.
Memorials may be made to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 1721 Enon Rd. Valdese, NC 28690.
