Born in Arkansas, age not given [b. ca. 1878]. Divorced. Railroad clerk. Died of tuberculosis. Father: Sylvanus Hanly [this is incorrect; his father was Robert Montgomery Hanly, and he was named after Robert's oldest brother, Sylvanus P. Hanly, 1839-1891]. Mother: [Madora Jane] "Dora" Williford. Informant: Mrs. Nat Graves [Robert's daughter and Sylvanus's sister Carrie May Hanly, who had married Nathaniel Jones Graves].

His entry in the 1910 census indicates that the younger Sylvanus P. Hanley was born around 1878. He volunteered for service during the Spanish-American War, mustering into Co. G, First Volunteer Infantry, Arkansas State Guard, 04 May 1898. He was made corporal 08 Aug 1898. He mustered out with the regiment 25 Oct 1898. He was appointed postmaster at North Creek, 26 Sep 1916.
