In the 1900 U.S. Census, Jim (age 23) and Julia (age 18) Buchanan lived in Midlothian, Texas with their daughter Lois (age 1). Jim was a farmer on rented land. See summary and link to original census page at:

Elmer Truman and Lois Buchanan married on 31 August 1916 in Lois’ hometown of Midlothian, a few miles south of Dallas. Elmer lived about 200 miles away in the new town of Bomarton in Baylor County, Texas. The two families may have become acquainted when the Truman family was still farming (1886 to perhaps 1894) around Wilmer, Texas, which is near Midlothian. The Buchanans were also farmers and may have lived only 15 to 20 miles from the Trumans. A nice article about the wedding was published in the Baylor County Banner on Thursday, 7 Sept 1916, as follows.

“Mr. Elmer Truman and Miss Lois Buchanan were united in marriage at the home of the bride, Midlothian, Texas, 8:00 o’clock Thursday evening of last week (August 31, 1916). The home was beautifully decorated in colors of white, green and pink. The ceremony was performed by Rev. W. M. Moore as the couple stood on the veranda under one of the garland-covered arches. The ceremony was attended with the usual wedding formalities, wedding march, bridesmaid, best man, etc., and was an impressive scene.
“After the nuptial knot had been tied, the bridal party stood in a receiving line and a reception followed to the large number of guests present. The couple left Saturday for Sunset [about half of the 200 miles between Midlothian and Bomarton], arriving here [Bomarton] Sunday evening. They will make their home in the new house of W. T. Truman.
“The bride is one of Midlothian’s most popular young ladies. She has all the good qualities that Mr. Truman, or any one else, could desire in a wife, and she has already made friends at Bomarton. The groom is a member of the firm of Truman Bros. and is a substantial young business man of the town. He has a multitude of friends who wish for him and bride the greatest happiness.”

After their marriage the couple made their home in Bomarton, Baylor County, Texas, where Elmer was a partner with his brother Fred in the Truman Brothers Dry Goods Co. Elmer was age 28 when he married and his bride was 10 years younger. They had one child, Thomas Lamoyn Truman, who was born in 1920.

In the 1920 U.S. Census Lois lived with her husband Thomas E Truman in Baylor County, Texas. Her father was born in Alabama (but probably was really Georgia per other data) and her mother in Texas. See summary and link to original census page at:

Several others from the Trumans also worked in the Truman store, which became the family business. After a few years, a second store was opened in the nearby town of Goree, Texas and Elmer and family moved there to manage that store. But a disaster occurred sometime in the late 1920s when a fire destroyed the Bomarton store. Apparently the family did not have the resources to rebuild the business. Their livelihood gone, the Trumans began to disperse and seek other opportunities.

Elmer and Lois Truman moved with their son to Fort Worth, Texas. In 1930 Elmer worked as a salesman for the Hoover Co. In the same year the family moved to Austin, Texas, where Elmer continued in sales for the Hoover Co. In 1940 Elmer, his wife Lois and their son Thomas Lamoyn and Lois’ mother Julia Buchanan lived together in Waco, Texas. Elmer was still working in appliance sales and associated with the Hoover Co., but Lois had also become the owner/operator of a beauty shop. Son Thomas (age 20) had completed two years of college. Lois and Elmer lived in Waco for the rest of their lives. Lois died at age 80 in 1979 and Elmer died at age 97 in 1986. Both were buried in Waco.

Thomas Elmer Truman was the son of William Thomas Truman who was the brother of John Anderson Truman, who became the father of President Harry S Truman. Thus Thomas Elmer Truman was a first cousin of the President..
