Harold Jefferson Carey, 74, former Shelley resident, died July 22, 1985, at a Lander hospital following a stroke.
He was born March 22, 1911, at Polk, Nebraska, the son of Charles Walter and Flora Bellington Carey, and the fifth child in a family of eight children: Esther, Jonathan, Bess, Ray, Harold, Marie, Earl, and Juanita. The family moved to Scotts Bluff, Nebraska where Harold's Father started a business as a teamster. He expected Harold to handle the load of a grown man and Harold became discouraged and headed west to Laramie, Wyoming. After a time he went to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where he worked on ranches as a ranch hand. To make a living year around he started baking pies and this little business evolved into running a small hamburger stand located near the present day Wort Hotel. In August 1939, he married Vera E. Clark Wilson at Pinedale. Wyoming. (He was previously married and had three children,Lloyd, Eugene and Cherie.)
They moved to Idaho Falls where he worked as a salesman, and later moved to Salt Lake City where he worked for the Kearns, Utah, Fire Department. There were two children born in Salt Lake, both dying in infancy, Sandra and Raymond. (These two children are buried in Taylor Cemetery east of Shelley, Idaho. Harold and Vera later moved to Lander, where he worked as a salesman. In 1979 they moved to Shelley. Mrs. Carey died in January this year (1985). He subsequently moved back to Lander to be with his family.
Surviving children are Gene, Lloyd, Cherie, Kenneth,and step sons Ronald and Donald Wilson; two brothers, Earl and John, and two sisters, Bess and Marie; and 19 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be in Nalder Funeral Home in Shelley with Bishop Bruce Crockett conducting. Burial will be in the Taylor Cemetery.
