Forest was the youngest child of James Merrill and Clara Etta Virgil Learmont. They are buried in Silver Lake Cemetery at Ayrshire, Iowa, as are two sisters and two brothers. His grandparents, his father's parents, were William and Catherine Cooper Learmont and they are buried in this cemetery. Forest married Carol Clark in Madelia, Watonwan County, MN on 1 December 1939. They had three children: Sandra Carol, Kathryn Ann and Lana Jean. Forest graduated from Silver Lake Consolidated High School in Ayrshire, Iowa in 1931. He was a farmer. Many Learmont relatives are buried in this cemetery including Hill, Harrison, and Bull families.
