GALESBURG - Carl N. Smith, 94, 170 S. West St., died at 12:54 a.m. Friday (Jan. 20, 1999) in OSF St. Mary Medical Center.
He was born June 16, 1904, in Otto, the son of Burton C. and Laura Mae Lancaster Smith.
He married Mattie I. Smith on Sept. 21, 1922, in Astoria. She died Jan. 2, 1946.
He then married Gladys Brown. She preceded him in death.
Surviving are one son, Loren Smith, Peoria Heights, three daughters, Margery Albin, Galesburg, Donna Moore, Peoria, and Maxine Homer, Abingdon, one brother, Everett Smith, Keokuk, Iowa, one sister, Clara Crocker, Burlington, Iowa, 17 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Carl Smith and Leland Smith, two sisters, and two grandchildren.
He was a farmer in West Central Illinois and Missouri for several years. He later moved to California and started a horse ranch in Apple Valley, Calif.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in Florida.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Shawgo Memorial Home, Astoria. Visitation will be one hour before time of service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Summum Cemetery near Astoria.
Memorials may be made to Community Hospice of Galesburg.
