Letter written (in part) to a Mrs. Miller dated Feb. 1, 1942
Dear Mrs. Miller,
I received your card yesterday, and was very glad to hear from you. I'm always glad to hear from folks around home. You folks out in civilian life don't know how much a little letter from around home means to a boy in the service. I know it sure helps our boys out to hear from home folks.
I'm sure glad I'm in the Med. Dep., there is a lot to learn but it is something a fellow can always use even on the outside. I've been in the service now nearly 11 mos. and I don't regret a bit of it. It learns a fellow something that he never would learn on the outside, there is no amount of money could buy what I've learned. We have a commanding officer that is the nicest one I've ever worked under. We have gave shots and put in sutures, he said he wanted us to know as much as he does. I'm afraid he is overestimated us a little. I don't know if they can get all the farm out of me or not. I get pretty lonesome for it once in a while.
They gave me a corporals rating so now I have to work and study more, but I don't mind that. I received that honor just a week for Xmas. It sure was a good present. I guess I was about the proudest boy in Ft. Jackson when they gave me those 2 little stripes. But I've tried not to let it go to my head. Ha, ha.
It is about time for CHOW and I wouldn't dare miss that. Ha, ha. Well if there is anyone up there that would care to write, I sure would enjoy hearing from them.
I'll have to say SO LONG for now.
Sincerely Yours, Corp. Donald E. Kelley
