CHILTON, Caroline:
Sister M. Alberta was born in Washington D.C on November 4, 1864. Her parents were Robert Chilton, New York City and Virginia Brent. She died at Loretto Abbey after a paralytic stroke on April 2, 1955. She was buried in Mount Hope Cemetery.
Sister Alberta was educated at Loretto Academy, Niagara Falls. She entered Loretto Abbey Novitiate, Toronto on November 27, 1886, was received on July 2, 1887 and professed on October 15, 1889.
Sister Alberta taught English at Loretto Academy, Guelph and at Loretto Abbey, where she lectured on the staff of Loretto College in 1925. In 1916, she was editor of the Rainbow [IBVM publication], for which she wrote many articles under the signature "Hildegarde". Later she taught in the Academy of Niagara Falls, where she was also superior. Before coming to the Abbey in 1938, she lived for some time in Hamilton. Her versatile literary gifts united to a cheerful, resourceful character made her an inspiring teacher and a successful Mistress of Schools. Her home background provided her with a knowledge and deep love of all literature. Her father encouraged her to memorize Shakespeare's plays and so prepared her to be an outstanding scholar and educator.
