Born in Immenried, Württemberg, Germany, the son of Frank Karl Badstuber and Maria Anna Knöpfler, Frank Joseph left home on 26 April 1893 at the age of 14 and arrived in New York on 12 May 1893, along with his 17 year-old brother Frank Xavier Badstuber. They came to Cleveland where their father, Frank Karl Badstuber, had lived since the mid-1880s and where their brother Max Badstuber had come the previous year. Both of them went to Texas with the intention of settling, but returned later to Ohio, Frank Joseph to Cleveland and Frank Xavier to Toledo. Frank Joseph never told his family about why they returned. After a series of different jobs ranging from bartender to street car conductor, Frank Joseph worked for many years as an insurance agent for Metropolitan Life. He married Bertha S. Schwan on June 12, 1901 and they had five children, two of whom survived him: Adelheid (1902-1904), twin sons, Joseph (1908-1926) and Frank (1908-1909) and twin daughters: Ruth Elizabeth (1906-1979) and Esther Josephine (1906-1995). Around 1934, after Bertha's death in 1931, Frank married Madonna Myers Sackman, who passed away in 1983. He was the grandfather of five, three grandsons and two granddaughters.
