Asheville - Hugh Helton DeLozier Sr., 84, of Asheville, passed away at Brakebill Nursing Home in Knoxville, Tenn., on Tuesday,

June 5, 2007.

He was born in Judson to the late John and Roxanne DeLozier on Sept. 13, 1922. When the TVA project flooded Judson, he moved to Asheville with his parents and five sisters. Hugh proudly served his country during World War II as an engineer and top turret gunner on a B-17.

Following the war, he graduated from the University of Tennessee, where he met his wife, Betty Hipps, also of Asheville. Married in 1950, he was a vocational education teacher at both Enka High School and Asheville High School. Hugh was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist church in Asheville.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; son, Hugh Jr. and wife, Mollie; granddaughters, Sara and Rachel DeLozier; sisters, Hazel Morris, Ruth Nicholson, Alwayne Williams, Elise Palmer and Charlotte Harrison; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was devoted to his family and loved the mountains of Western North Carolina.

A private, family graveside service will be conducted on Friday at Pisgah View Memorial Park, Candler, with the Rev. Rodney Hagan officiating.
