Author. Theodor Storm, a 19th century German author, made a significate impact in German Realism literature. He wrote both poems and prose. Born Hans Theodor Woldsen Storm , the son of a wealthy lawyer, he lived his childhood in a rural coastal part of Germany, which was ruled by the King of Denmark in the early 19th century. Often remembering this area of the world in his writings, he wrote about the positive happenings of daily life. Following his father's footsteps, he studied law in Berlin and Keil. While at the university in 1842, he with two other students published a collection of poetry, "Songbook of Three Friends," and this was the dawn of his career as an author. While ending his law practice in 1852, he wrote simple-versed poetry and dozens of short stories. His poetry had a strong patriotic tone, which led him to have problems with the Danish government in Schleswig-Holstein, thus moving in exile south into German territory. He became a Prussian judge until his retirement in 1880. A year after the death of his wife, he published "Deep Shadows" in 1865. The couple had seven children. In 1866 he remarried and the couple had one child. At that point, he changed his style, writing more novels and addressing reality subjects such as class tensions, social problems, and religious bigotry. He wrote ten novels. He had a talent of expressing himself without being censored and causing the reader to think about social issues. His two most recognized writings are the novellas "Immensee" in 1849 and "Der Schimmelreiter" in 1888, which was his last masterpiece and translated into English in 2009 as "The Rider on the White Horse." He wrote three autobiographies. His granddaughter was the noted painter, Elisabeth Dering.
