Correspondence of the Galena Gazette:
Apple River, August 29, 1888—Notice was received here last Saturday from the county house, of the death of E. B. Downs, formerly of this place. At one time the deceased was in good circumstances, and quite a prominent man here, both in church and business affairs of the village. A few years ago he parted from his wife, they divided their property, and after spending what he had, he went to the poor house about four years ago. His wife and daughter still live in the village. It looks hard for a man who had lived with his wife and family for 30 years to end his days in the county house and be buried as a pauper. He was village and township clerk here for a great many years, and at one time had hosts of friends, “Peace be to his ashes,” for in a short time he will be forgotten by the multitude.
