MARION - Maxine Ozment Clayton, 89, passed into the presence of God and her beloved family members at 2:20 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 26, 2010, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

Maxine was born June 23, 1921, in Johnston City to Loren and Lucy (Cummins) Ozment. She married Judge John H. Clayton Jr. on Oct. 18, 1942, in St. Louis. Maxine graduated from Johnston City High School. Her memberships included First Baptist Church of Johnston City and Marion, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and Order of the Eastern Star. She volunteered in several community organizations and considered her family her first priority and most important job. Maxine lived in Johnston City, Marion and Carbondale.

She is survived by her two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Greg Meredith of Carbondale and Susan and Mark Meyer of Lawrenceville, Ga.; four grandchildren, Michelle (Pete) Fedyszen, Justin (Jenny) Meredith, Melinda (Mark) Roberts and Jon (Jonni) Meredith. She has six great-grandchildren, Jillian, Jodie, John, Jeb, Nicholas and Katherine. She is also survived by a brother-in-law, James (Elise Heinz) Clayton; a sister-in-law, Mary Edna Ozment of Marion; and many cherished nieces and nephews. Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three sisters, Mildred Williamson, Wilma Riley, identical twin, Lorene Boatright; and three brothers, Howard, Harold and Lorris Ozment. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, 2010, in Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale, with burial following in Lakeview Cemetery in Johnston City. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association or Hospice of Southern Illinois and will be accepted at the funeral home.
