Betsey Jane Irish was born in Buckfield, Maine. Betsey was the granddaughter of William Irish who first settled in Buckfield from Gorham, Maine. Betsey became the second wife of Jacob Cox of Turner, Maine. They were married on 12 Feb 1839 in Buckfield, Oxford, Maine. Jacob was twelve years her senior. Jacob first wife Mary Ann Packard of Buckfield/Sumner, Maine died, leaving him a widower with six children; four sons and two daughters.

Betsey became a instance mother to six children upon their marriage. Plus Betsey gave Jacob seven more children, six more sons and one daughter. Bring their family to a total of 13 children.

Most of her sons and stepsons served in the Civil War. Her son Amasa was killed at Petereburg, VA battle in 1864. Amasa is buried behind his parents at Lane Cemetery.

Betsey lived out her last ten years after the death of her husband Jacob, with her sons Algernon, Roscoe and their families in Mechanic Falls, Maine.
