Years Illness Takes Life Of Ex-Minister;
Rites Set for Thursday
LA VERNE. Nov. 29
The Rev. Emanuel J. Smith of 2278 5th street. La Verne, died this morning at 2:45 oclock at the Sunshine Rest home, San Dimas, following an Illness of one year. Mr. Smith was born in Mount Morris, Ill., on January 18, 1869. As a young man of 24 years, he became a minister in the Church of the Brethren and for 40 years served in this capacity in Enid, Okla., New Mexico and the Panhandle of Texas. Five years ago, he came to La Verne and had made his home there since that time. Eighteen months ago he was married to Mrs. Ella M. Hurshey (sic Hershey) Mauss of Gettysburg, Penn., who survives him. He also leaves two daughters, Mrs. W. E. Niswander of La Verne, Mrs. G. W. Call of Ontario: two sons. Jesse R. and Edwin E. Smith, both of La Verne; and one grandchild, Wayne Call of Ontario. Funeral services will be held from the local Church of the Brethren Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Dr. D. W. Kurtz and the Rev. Galen K. Walker will officiate. Interment will follow In Evergreen cemetery. La Verne.
