Patent trader - Saturday, Jan. 31, 1970, Pg. 4: - MT. KISCO — J. Robert Britton, member of a pioneer Mt. Kisco family and retired postal carrier who began delivering mail by horse and buggy in 1910, died Wednesday at Northern Westchester Hospital after a long illness.He was 79 and lived on Byram Lake Road. Mr. Britton was born in Mt. Kisco April 14, 1890. He also was the former owner of Britton and Thomas gas station here and of a bus franchise that went through Mt. Kisco. He was an Army veteran of World War I. He was a charter member of the Mt. Kisco Knights of Columbus, members of the Ushers Society of St. Francis of Assisi Church, the Moses Taylor Post American Legion and the Mt. Kisco Fire Department. His grandparents were among the first five settlers in Mt. Kisco. Britton Lane is named after the grandparents. Mass was first celebrated in Mt. Kisco in the home of Mr. Britton's material grandparents, the Lynchs, by a priest who traveled from Pleasantville to Chappaqua to Mt. Kisco, before St. Francis Church was founded. Mr. Britton's wife, Jeannette, died 13 years ago. He leaves four daughters, Mrs. Catherine Trimmer of Manhattan Beach, Calif., Mrs. Jeanette Blackeby of Mt. Kisco, Mrs. Roberta Hart of Ridgefield, Conn. and Mrs. Cynthia Booth of Katonah; one son, J. Robert Britton Jr. of Southington, Conn.; 20 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Requiem mass will be offered at 11 a.m. today (Saturday) at St. Francis Church. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery. Arrangements were by Edward A. Cassidy Funeral Home, Mt. Kisco.
