Carol Jean (Massey) Wall passed peacefully on Monday, March 25, 2019 while at Cottage in the Meadow. Carol was born on February 5, 1937 in Pomona, California to Aylmer H. Massey and Marie L. Warner. Carol married Donald J. Wall a total of three times. The couple first eloped to Mexico on January 1, 1957. At the request of their parents, a family ceremony followed on February 26 in Yuma, Arizona. Always desiring a church wedding, they renewed their vows on July 14, 1988 in Yakima, Washington.
The middle child sandwiched between two brothers, Al and Jerry, Carol grew up a tomboy and proud of it. She graduated from Covina High School and attended Mount San Antonio College before starting a career as a switchboard operator with the Bell Telephone System after her marriage. Carol continued work with Bell when the family relocated to Mill Valley and then Petaluma, California. She had a short stint as a telephone lineman, just to prove she could do it. After the move in 1973 to Yakima, Carol changed careers and began work as the office assistant for dentist, Dr. Ronald Riehl. When Don’s job again pulled the couple on another journey to western Washington, Carol worked for a few dentists before moving to a career at the Washington Dental Service. While in Seattle, Carol began a street ministry with Andrew Porter, feeding the homeless each Saturday. Carol had a heart to meet the needs of others and gave generously and selflessly to many. When Don retired from Greyhound, Carol was also ready to retire from her working career and move back to Yakima to become a full-time grandma to her then four grandchildren. She also expanded her creative passions by starting Carol’s Creations, crafting quilts, tree skirts, wall hangings and other items to sell at bazaars and gift to friends and family. When her own father became ill, Carol and Don took him into their home and cared for him until his passing, a task Carol undertook for her own husband a few years later.
Carol is survived by children Catherine (Keith) Matson, Victoria (Larry) Gore, Scott (Bettie) Wall, grandchildren Vanessa Matson, Brooke Matson, Hillary Matson, Derek (Natalie) Gore, Allison Parker (Ted Craven), Nathen (Nichole) Anderson, Georgia Wall, great-grandchildren Kailey-Mae Parker, Jackson Parker, Cash Parker, Jazzlyn Gore, and Jaden Anderson along with brothers Aylmer Massey, Jr., and Jerry Massey and sister-in-law Marilyn (Thomas) Seeberg. She is preceded in death by both parents and her husband, Donald Wall.
Graveside service will be held on Wednesday, April 17, 2019 at West Hills Memorial Park at 12 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. at West Side Church, 6901 Summitview Avenue. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be directed to the Yakima Union Gospel Mission or to the Humane Society.
